Now that school holidays are here and the country is starting to dry out a little, it is time to get serious about the mustering. The kids’ horses are fat and shiny. We’ve all grown a little and stirrup lengths need to be let down a hole or two.
After helping Dad yard a mob of heifers to be trucked in the morning, Andrew and Lachlan were given the contract to muster the milkers and bring a new cow into milk.

Andrew took on the role of head stockman, leaving Lachlan in position at the gate.

while he cantered off to bring the cow and calf in.

This milker has always caused us a little anxiety. She has an ample supply and is soft and easy to milk but to quote Rob, “She certainly isn’t the brightest candle in the packet”. Especially when it comes down to seeing an open gate….

Andrew sheep dogged her for a while …..
ducked around some trees….

before moving up on her shoulder.

He finally got her heading in the right direction, toward the open gate.

Meanwhile his offsider quit.
(Notice Andrew is still chasing the milker in the background!!)

After yarding the cow up and segregating the calf, Andrew gave her a big bucket of feed so that tomorrow she will be a little easier to yard into the milker pen.

We will have to work a bit more on the teamwork before heading out into the bigger paddocks later this week….

looks like the jeans have gotten shorter as well! your oldest boy rides so very well, great campdrafting of the cow on the lawn :-)and what a lovely kind horse he has too (and so handy to do all of that in front of mum’s camera as well!)

still smiling at Rob’s description of the cow.
